Durham Castle
In 1072, William the Conqueror initiated the construction of the Castle following the Norman Conquest of England, which had occurred six years earlier when the Normans arrived in the North. To start, the Earl of Northumberland, Waltheof, oversaw the construction.
However, in 1076, Waltheof rebelled against William and was executed.
I'm sure many of us might imagine a similar fate for builders we know, haha.
Subsequently, control of the castle was assumed by Walcher, the Bishop of Durham, who acquired the earldom through purchase.

This event marked the beginning of the lineage of Prince-Bishops of Durham, a title that would endure until the 19th century. This unique status granted Durham a distinct position in England.
